Do Your Memories Pop Up on Facebook Too?

ree

Do your memories pop up on Facebook and stop you in your tracks? Mine often do. Sometimes they’re of my kids when they were little—pigtails, soccer games, messy art projects, bedtime snuggles. Maybe I’m just getting more sensitive, or maybe it’s this crazy world we’re living in, but I catch myself asking: Where has the time gone?

I don’t regret a single moment. I feel blessed that I was able to be at home with my children for most of their lives. But that gift has also made “the leaving the nest” season a little bit harder for me.

I cherish those memories deeply—but I don’t want the memories to stop. I want to keep making new ones. And I want to learn about these two incredible young women my daughters are becoming.

One thing I’ve realized is that the little stuff matters. The everyday conversations, the check-ins, the moments around the dinner table or in the car. For years I used to ask the classic: “How was your day?” And the answer?“Fine.”“Okay.”And that was that.

Those answers didn’t tell me anything about their world, their feelings, or the challenges they were carrying. So I shifted. Instead of yes/no or one-word questions, I started asking things that open the door to real conversations.

Here are some examples you can try with your own kids, no matter their age:

  • “What made you smile today?”

  • “What was the hardest part of your day?”

  • “Who did you sit with at lunch?”

  • “If you could change one thing about today, what would it be?”

  • “What’s something you’re proud of yourself for?”

  • “What’s something you’re looking forward to tomorrow?”

It’s not about having the “perfect” questions. It’s about showing genuine curiosity. Our kids don’t always need us to solve their problems—they just want us to listen, to be present, and to keep the conversation going.

Because while we can’t go back and relive yesterday, we can choose how we show up today. And for me, that means creating space for connection, one open-ended question at a time.
